And another bay colt! Welcome to this little man too, though not sure he’s going to be too ‘little’! Mulberry had obviously imparted her knowledge of communing with nature when giving birth as Mum found this foal snuggled in a nest in the middle of a haylage pile in the field!

Like his half-brother, he seems to take it all in his stride, though has more of a cheeky nature.

“Un-named”: s. Trelawn Couturier, d. Earlhouse Amberway

Well, Mulberry decided that she wanted to commune with nature when having her foal; she took us by surprise and before we knew it (and could get a nice snuggly straw bed in place), there were 12 legs in the field one morning, instead of 8 - Rosie was acting as midwife!

Truffle is doing really well and he loaded like a complete pro at less than one day old. He seems to have Mull’s laid-back temperament as nothing seems to faze him. Not sure on his eventual colour but put it this way, we’re not 100% sure he’ll stay bay.

Truffle: s. Trelawn Couturier, d. Lady Mulberry Hill

It is with heavy heart that I have to write that Milly had to be put down this morning. At 36, Piran Camilla was the matriarch to Coswarth Stud; she nurse-maided the weaned foals, giving them much-needed lessons in manners; she provided hilarity when watching her act the fool (yes, she could still buck!); she taught us all to be on our guard as just when you thought that taking Milly to a veteran class in an in-hand bridle would be ok... she’d tank you around the ring, hence she was always shown in a double bridle!

Before we bought her, she was a successful brood mare for the Piran Stud, then when she came to us aged 14, she was broken in and Lowenna rode her as a 14hh Show Hunter Pony: “She was unlike anything else I had ridden, and I had ridden a 13hh and 14hh grandson of hers! She rode like a horse and was just as complicated. However, you always had a sense that she was in charge and knew exactly what she was doing, I was merely a passenger!” Her elegance was always noticed in the show ring and she had a wonderful presence that oozed star quality.

Ok, maybe this isn’t a classic photo of a foal but I only had my mobile and it was food time. You should have seen the others...

Anyway, the little man pictured above is “Rocky” - so called because he got up 15 minutes after he was born, no wobbling and went straight to feed. He’s quite a bruiser but with the gentlest temperament ever. His dam is Earlhouse Amberway and sire is Trelawn Couturier - we reckon he’s going to be an elegant version of his dam as he’s rather large! I’m going down as saying I guess he’s going to be 16.2hh (dam’s 16.3hh and his hocks are close to hers already!)

Held at the Grange on Thursday 30th August, we took Coswarth Maverick (shown above) and a filly by Maximillian Voltucky - Izzy - on behalf of our Stud Manager.

They were both entered in the 3 year old eventer category and as well as being run out in hand, they were to complete a jumping lane.

After an incredibly long day, not helped by major traffic disruption with the A30 being shut, we were delighted when Maverick was awarded 8.42 and won the section, with Izzy reserve. We were also over the moon to discover that Max’s score had put him 3rd nationally in the 3 year old eventing category.
